McDonald’s, for pity's sake. Of all the places in the city they could choose, they’d ended up here. But teenagers were teenagers, and this was a rare treat. Hans grinned at Mary. “McDonald’s is a thing. You can’t fight it. Besides, it’s not like any of these local places are going to beat Gabriela’s cooking. Just order something beefy and cheesy with a side of crack fries and you won’t go wrong.”

Quinn was all in. “No complaints here. I love a good Big Mac.”

Mary smiled, “You’re a shame to your blood line, lad.” They all lined up for the big order, with Caitlyn and Rosalis saving some seats at a big table.

The mood had swung back to festive as they filled their bellies. Mary nudged Caitlyn who was eating a Happy Meal. “Don’t judge me. The toy is good. I can put it in my classroom.”

“Dr. Gordon is going to be so jealous. I have it on good authority that she’s a double quarter pounder with cheese connoisseur.” Mary said.

“Well then, we buy her two and take them with us. She can reheat them back to their original glory.” Hans accentuated that with a large bite of his own double. He looked over at the five kids sharing a table. “It was a good day, wasn’t it?” He smiled at Raphael. “Don’t worry about him, brother. We’ll help him find his path.”

Raphael gave a half grin, popping some fries into his mouth. “Sim, Senhor. We will protect him, even if it’s from himself.”
